Our February unit was titled "Water is Life". We focused on water conservation and being good stewards of the water we are entrusted with. Students learned about the plight of the Colorado River Delta in Mexico. Because of the water of the Colorado river being diverted to cities like Los Angeles and Las Vegas, the Colorado River Delta has turned into a desert and the water from the river no longer flows into the sea. The students learned about the causes of this catastrophe. They also learned about how different people are trying to solve this problem. For our project, students used 500.00 from a grant from Saveonenergy.com and 250.00 from the Arlington Education Foundation grant and created their own rainwater catchment system. These systems will allow us to recycle rainwater and use it to water our butterfly garden at Donelson and our gardens at AES.
